But to be really good at something you need to practice a lot. To be a great orienteer, you need to do a lot of orienteering training.I've been casually following Dan. Dan is in the early phases of an experiment. He started to play golf with the idea of completing 10,000 hours of practice and a goal of playing professionally. He started as a complete beginner. Check out a video from the Dan Plan web page to get an idea of the project. The Dan Plan Webisode Launch Promo from Dan McLaughlin on Vimeo. The video features two of the all time greats - Annichen and Jorgen. As TV coverage of oreinteering it is pretty good. You get some "headcam-like" footage in the forest to start the clip. The rain drops on the lens enhance the feeling of being out in the forest. You get some competition footage of Annichen taking a control during a race. Another competitor is in the clip, which gives you a sense of how much better Annichen than her competition. You get some nice images of both Annichen and Jorgen running in the forest with a camera paralleling them. When the camera parallels the runners you get a real sense of how fast they are moving. It reminds me a bit of the of the opening credits from the movie Endurance. The coverage also includes some footage from Annichen's win at the 1981 WOC. Overall, I think the video also highlights an area where orienteers can do better (and an area where I think orienteers are getting better) - coming across as engaging to the viewer. Watch the video with the eyes of a regular TV viewer and you might might conclude that Annichen is quiet, shy and not very interesting, while Jorgen is uncomfortable and just doesn't look very happy (not that many people look happy while munching on raw vegetables). Both events had a twist. By rule we could only run on the trails in the forest. The rule made the orienteering more interesting (and it kept us out of the thick forest). You can also see the score course as a GoPro headcam video+GPS track+map. Back to okansas.blogspot.com. posted by Michael | 4:59 PM |
