Occassional thoughts about orienteering

Has any other team preparing for the U.S. relay champs had the help of a shaman? Once again, Orienteer Kansas innovates!

Some of the forest in Mongolia would make for nice orienteering. This forest was on a steep hillside.

Terelj is just east of Ulaanbaatar. The terrain reminded me of some of the orienteering areas in Colorado and Wyoming.

Classic Mongolian landscape - beautiful green countryside, a basketball goal, and a horse.

Eddie wondered about authentic Mongolian food. I'd say that if it isn't mutton and dairy, it isn't authentic Mongolian food. Mongolian's consume a lot of different dairy products from cows, goats, sheep and mares. A favorite is airag -- fermented mares' milk. Airag is served in a bowl (see the photo). I enjoyed airag. It tastes a bit like a thin yogurt/beer. Airag has some alcohol, but not much. You'd have to drink a huge amount to feel the alcohol. I found airag to do a great job of quenching a thirst.

I just got home after spending two weeks in Mongolia. I don't plan to get back to daily updates until August 1, but I'll be posting some of the photos from our Mongolia trip over the next few days. I took this snapshot in a little valley between Kharkhorin and Khotont. We spent a few days in this valley, living with a nomadic herding family.

Daily updates resume August 1

I'll resume daily updates of this page on August 1. I'm doing a bunch of travel, for pleasure and for work, during July. I will probably update the page 3 or 4 or 5 times during July, but I'm not going to update it daily.

If you're looking for daily updates, you're out of luck. But, poke around the archives and maybe you'll find something interesting.
