Orienteering "dream job"
Teaching orienteering is the "dream job" for a young orienteer. Read about it in the article from the Whitehorse Star. The paper covers a lot of orienteering (for a North American newspaper, that is).
Having Colin do this job has allowed us (volunteers) to take on some other initiatives. This year we have started a high performance program with regular training M, W, F, Sun for the more serious members of our club in much the same way as European clubs. Time will tell if this is money well spent. I think for us it will be worthwhile. Of course, it helps that this is partly funded through a government grant.
I think we do get quite a lot of coverage from the local media. This likely stems from the fact that we are quite successful on a national level despite the small population (Whse has ~20,000). I think we have about 8 former and current WOC/JWOC participants who are active in our club. Colin and Lee Hawkings are the most recent and will be at JWOC this year.
