Gawande on solving problems
Why it makes sense to spend lots of time looking at maps, picking routes, thinking about what you'd see, etc...
As Lucian Leape, ...explains, "a defining trait of experts is that they move more and more problem-solving into an automatic mode." With repetition, a lot of mental functioning becomes automatic and effortless, as when you drive a car to work."
The text is from Atul Gawande'sComplications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science. I've just started the book and it is, so far, quite interesting. I can recommend his other book, Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance.
