I don't want to train much orienteering because then I get tired of it. Several months can go by when I don't hold a map. When, before a championship, I begin with map reading I'm able to quickly fix the mistakes I make. People who train orienteering on a daily basis, year after year, learn how to make mistakes instead of learning how to do it right.
What works for Thierry obviously works in the Middle Distance. What works for Hanny obviously works in the Long and Sprint. The Middle is her weakest discipline. Perhaps the very different styles of course setting for the disciplines favour different styles of training.
Actually, it's not so obvious Hanny's training method does work for her. To answer that you need to know how much of her success is due to raw ability and how much to training, and that's impossible to answer. Maybe if she trained differently, she'd be up with Simone, rather than at the bottom end of the top 10, this year.
Of course, maybe if she trained like Simone, she'd have dropped out of orienteering altogether. We (and she) will never really know.
