Thursday, January 11, 2007 Orienteering on Finnish TVCheck out some orienteering coverage from Finnish TV. (Follow the link and click on the video button). They've put up coverage WOCs in 1966, 1979 and 2001.*The videos are fun to watch. They do a nice job of showing orienteering as running in the forest. Watching the best in the world run through the terrain is always inspiring. They move with such a light stride that you watch the video and feel like going out for a run. I also like the way the Finnish commentary sounds. It is such a mysterious sounding language. Watch the 2001 women's relay for the photo finish for the silver. The men's relay isn't nearly as dramatic. For some reason Finnish TV didn't show the big fight between US and Canada on the anchor leg. * Or perhaps 1966 was European Champs? I took part in a rerun of the 1966 course, on the original map updated with a few new forest roads. The terrain is still awesome altough the new roads and a powerline make the course a lot easier.
Those are just quite short summaries from the whole broadcasts (mostly live, appr. 7-8 hrs altogether), so it's possible the "derby" between those rivals was seen on TV here in Finland :). Btw, it was WOC in 1966 - the first ever.
Unfotunately, clicking on that link got me a "Varmista, että laitteistosi täyttää alla olevat vaatimukset. Oikealla näet automaattisen laitteistotestauksen tulokset." error. I hate when that happens.
J-J, I also hate that. But why don't you just click the "Jatka mahdollisista virheistä huolimatta" link?
