okansas.blogspot.com Occassional thoughts about orienteering |
Thursday, January 04, 2007 Live GPS tracking for club training?Wouldn't it be cool to be able to have a live GPS tracking system for small events, like club training sessions?I can imagine something where each runner carries a small GPS transmitter that sends the location signal back to a small receiver with a map screen. You could sit and that start and watch the race unfold on the screen - just like the big races like Tio Mila and WOC. Garmin is planning to start selling just such a toy in the coming year. But, it isn't designed for orienteering. The intended market is hunters who want to live tracking of their dogs. Back to okansas.blogspot.com. posted by Michael | 6:15 PM

- This system might be useful for finding a lost/injured person. A safety tool for juniors/older athletes.
- "The system transmits information by line-of-sight, so it reaches farthest in flat, open territory". The transmitter unit does not have own memory, it only send's position data to the handheld. This means if connection breaks, route is lost for good. I think it may not work so well as orienteering tracking system (in hilly terrains). - In Jyväskylä they have had live tracking in some of their local/club trainings. They use quite similar system angryhaggis is using, but it also uses the cell phone to send position data to a server. - Several groups are using offline gps tracking in their club trainings, they simply record the route with any gps device and compare logs afterwards, in finish with a laptop or home on web. Off line tracking is usually enough for trainings. There is would be nobody watching the handheld at the finish anyway, everyone is out in the forest. -Jagge-
