Map reading as a second language
Reading a map is a lot like reading a second language. I suspect you can use that analogy to think about how map study "works."
Here are a few words from Bjornar Valstad (written by Bjornar in English...no translation necessary):
Mapreading is about learning a language. Like any other language it is hard to learn without a good teacher. You can learn to speak english by traveling around, but not the Oxford way! The same way will it be very difficult beeing a top athleet in orienteering trying to go all the way all on yor own.
