Some training in the 1993 WOC terrain
The map is from some training I ran last weekend at Surebridge Mountain (the 1993 WOC classic terrain).
For the two longer legs, my training was to plan the leg while stopped, then put away the map and run the leg. I like training that way. You're rewarded for seeing the overall terrain structure, keeping your head up and actively looking for features to lead you to the control. It is also a good way to make use of "model terrain" because it helps you see the big picture.
I don't get to run this sort of training very often because most of the maps I train on are familiar. With familiar terrain this sort of practice doesn't work as well because you can get lazy (i.e. not seeing the terrain structure from the map, but seeing it from familiarity with the area).
I ran a local event at Tall Oaks today. The forest has a bit of underbrush and thorns which make route choices more interesting. The map has 2 meter contours, so the hills are smaller than you might think.
